Worship Begins with Jesus
Colossians 1:15-18
Hymn about Christ’s work
15 The Son is the image of the invisible God,
the one who is first over all creation,
16 Because all things were created by him:
both in the heavens and on the earth,
the things that are visible and the things that are invisible.
Whether they are thrones or powers,
or rulers or authorities,
all things were created through him and for him.
17 He existed before all things,
and all things are held together in him.
18 He is the head of the body, the church,
who is the beginning,
the one who is firstborn from among the dead
so that he might occupy the first place in everything.
Key Verse
“He is the head of the body, the church…”
DevoThoughts
Every ministry has a temptation to lose sight of its purpose.
For worship teams, that temptation often comes disguised as good things. We focus on arrangements, rehearsals, transitions, technology, and excellence. None of those things are wrong. In fact, they are often necessary. The danger comes when those things begin to occupy the center of our attention.
Paul reminds us that Christ is supreme over all creation. Everything exists through Him and for Him. That includes our worship ministry.
Jesus is not part of worship. He is the reason worship exists.
When our focus drifts, worship can become about performance, preference, or production. When Christ remains at the center, worship becomes an offering. Our songs become declarations. Our service becomes devotion.
People should leave our gatherings talking more about Jesus than they do about the music.
As a team, we must continually ask ourselves:
- Are we helping people see Jesus?
- Are we personally pursuing Him?
- Is He truly the center of our worship?
When Christ remains central, everything else finds its proper place.
Reflex Questions
- What originally drew you into worship ministry?
- What distractions most often pull your focus away from Christ?
- What would it look like for Jesus to remain the center of everything we do?
Team Challenge
Spend some extra time each day this week worshipping without music. Focus only on Jesus and His character.
